Brothers and sisters of children with a chronic illness are significantly more likely to have behavioural problems than children who do not have a sibling with health problems, according to a new study.
Dr. Christine Laufsweiler-Plass, who conducted the study at Cologne University Hospital, used data from the largest study, to-date, of children with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA). Dr. Laufsweiler-Plass used the Achenbach child behaviour checklist (CBCL), where parents or other individuals rate a child’s problem behaviours.
The study subjects, who were between 6 and 11 years of age, included 42 SMA patients, 17 siblings of SMA patients and a control group of 28 children with no chronic illness in the family.
