The combination of ibuprofen plus acetaminophen was effective but not superior to ibuprofen alone for relief of acute non-life-threatening pain in adults treated at an urban emergency department, according to a randomised, placebo-controlled study.
Moreover, treatment with ibuprofen alone was superior to monotherapy with acetaminophen, said senior author Michael Mullins, MD of Washington University, in St. Louis, Missouri, United States. Dr. Mullins and colleagues presented the research here at the Scientific Assembly 2002 of the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP).
Adult patients presenting with non-life-threatening pain were randomly assigned to ibuprofen, acetaminophen or ibuprofen plus acetaminophen. The patients were given 40 mL of a liquid that contained either 800 mg ibuprofen or placebo and two pills that contained either 1000 mg of acetaminophen or placebo, Dr. Mullins explained.
