Patients with severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) who exercise with proportional assist ventilation achieve greater maximum exercise capacity than those who exercise unaided, according to a report in the October issue of Thorax.
Dr. Peter Hawkins and colleagues from King’s College Hospital, London, examined the effects of providing ventilatory assistance to COPD patients during high-intensity exercise training. Nineteen patients, with a mean FEV1 of 27% of predicted, completed a 6-week supervised outpatient cycle exercise program. Of these, 10 were randomized to exercise with proportional assist ventilation and 9 to exercise unaided.
