NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Oct 08 –
In HIV-positive patients, traditional risk factors for cardiovascular disease are much more associated with myocardial infarction or stroke than is the use of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART), at least in the short term, Spanish researchers report. These findings add to the continuing debate over the relationship between HAART and cardiovascular disease, particularly about the role of protease inhibitors (PI).
For example, two reports presented earlier this year at the 9th Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections in Seattle came to different conclusions. One study found an increased risk of MI in patients using PIs, while the other found no association between any antiretroviral therapy and cardiovascular events (see Reuters Health report February 28, 2002).
