Instances of primary cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection with serious manifestations, in individuals who have not been infected with HIV or received an organ transplant, are reported in the October issue of the Journal of Medical Virology.
While CMV infection occurs commonly in immunocompromised patients, the authors note, it is rare and usually subclinical in immunocompetent adults.
