Mizolastine has been found to be more effective than loratadine after two weeks of treatment for effective relief of symptoms among patients with perennial allergic rhinitis.
Dr Freche Leynadier and colleagues at the Hopital Americain, Neuilly sur Seine, France, carried out a multicenter, randomized, double-blind, parallel-group study to evaluate the efficacy and safety of mizolastine in perennial allergic rhinitis PAR compared with loratadine and placebo.
Mizolastine is a non-sedating H1 histamine receptor antagonist with additional anti-allergic properties. It is currently marketed in Europe for the treatment of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis and urticaria. Following a one week placebo run-in, Dr Leynadier and colleagues assigned 141 adult PAR patients to receive mizolastine 10 mg, 141 to receive loratadine 10 mg, and 146 to receive placebo, once daily for 28 days. Symptoms were evaluated by both the patients and doctors using a total nasal score, including itching, rhinorrhea, nasal blockade, and severity of sneezing.
