For women undergoing ovulation induction who develop high estrogen levels and many small to medium-sized follicles, administration of methylprednisolone helps prevent ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS), researchers in Greece have determined.
“During the last 5 years we hospitalized only 3 patients out of 2000 patients who we treated in our IVF unit,” lead researcher Dr. Trifon Lainas told Reuters Health. Use of methylprednisolone may also “help to reduce cycle cancellations, with concomitant increases in pregnancy rates per cycle, and improve cost effectiveness per IVF cycle,” he said.
