Among postmenopausal women, the risks of ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke both increase in the first 6 months after the initiation of hormone replacement therapy (HRT), study results show. In addition, higher doses of estrogen are associated with an increased risk of ischemic stroke.
Dr. Rozenn Lemaitre, from the University of Washington in Seattle, and colleagues report the study findings in the September 23rd issue of Archives of Internal Medicine. “There is little information about the risk of stroke in relation to time since initiation of hormone therapy and in relation to estrogen dose,” they write.
They looked at both of these issues in a population-based case-control study involving 726 women with ischemic stroke, 213 with hemorrhagic stroke, and 2,525 matched controls.
