Continuous Labor Support By Nurses Does Not Reduce C-Sections

— Use of continuous labor support rather than standard nursing care does not affect the likelihood of cesarean delivery or other medical or psychosocial outcomes, according to a study reported in the Sept. 18 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association. The authors suggest that their findings call into question the usefulness of guidelines in Canada, the U.S. and the U.K. which recommend continuous care.

“To me, the clear message is if you are serious about wanting to reduce or at least not increase your cesarean delivery rates, don’t count on one-to-one support by nurses as the only answer,” lead author Ellen D. Hodnett, RN, PhD, from the University of Toronto, Canada, says in a news release. Hodnett’s earlier meta-analysis of 14 other studies of continuous support suggested that this level of support significantly reduced the risk of cesarean delivery.

She attributes different results in the current study to the different routines in the settings in which the studies were conducted, such that the benefits of continuous labor support may be overpowered in North American, high-intervention labor wards.
