Losartan significantly reduces the risk of stroke in hypertensive patients with atrial fibrillation and left ventricular hypertrophy compared to atenolol, a study presented here at the 24th Congress of the European Society of Cardiology has found.
The study examined the risk of stroke in a subset of 324 patients with atrial fibrillation at baseline (mean age 70.5; 42.3 percent female) from the Losartan Intervention for Endpoint Reduction in Hypertension (LIFE) Study of 9,193 patients. Patients in the LIFE study were randomised to double blind treatment with the angiotensin II receptor antagonist (AIIA) losartan or the beta-blocker antenolol.
Additional open-label hypertensive treatment (with the exception of beta blockers, ACE inhibitors or AIIAs) could be added in order to reach the target blood pressure of <140/90 mm Hg.
