Early treatment with simvastatin 40 mg in acute coronary syndromes (ACS) produce several changes in markers of endothelial damage that do not appear to be related to inflammation. That’s the conclusion of a study presented here at the 24th Congress of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) by Dr. P. Tricoci from the Institute of Cardiology, University of Bologna, in Bologna, Italy.
Dr. Tricoci and colleagues, were aiming to evaluate the effects of simvastatin 40 mg on markers of inflammation and endothelial damage in 77 patients with ACS. “Statin treatment has been shown to decrease inflammation after long-term exposure of patients with stable ACS,” Dr. Tricoci said.
“Likewise, an improvement in endothelial function and thrombotic burden have been reported. However, the inflammation state in ACS is highly unstable and the statin effect on top of these fluctuations is not presently known.”
