A review of studies that compared intravenous aminophylline with placebo, in combination with beta-agonists, for the treatment of asthma found that aminophylline’s role in treating acute asthma in adults is unclear
. However, “clear evidence” of harmful effects of aminophylline were found, suggesting that “aminophylline should not be used in adults with acute asthma,” according to a report in the September issue of the Annals of Emergency Medicine.
