Perinatal outcomes of multifetal pregnancy can be just as good for older women as for younger women, and sometimes better. Assisted reproduction and improved prenatal care probably account for the finding, reported in the September issue of Fertility and Sterility.
As the authors note, the risk of adverse outcomes is known to increase with maternal age in singleton pregnancies. However, the current findings indicate that this relationship virtually disappears for twin pregnancies. Furthermore, for triplet pregnancies it appears that older women may be at lower risk for poor perinatal outcomes.
