In adults latently infected with varicella-zoster virus, re-exposure to the virus via contact with children seems to reduce their risk of zoster, according to a report in the August 31st issue of The Lancet.
In a case-control study, Dr. Sara L. Thomas and colleagues from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, UK, examined the hypothesis that contacts with children increase exposure to varicella-zoster virus and protect against zoster in latently infected adults.
Patients recently diagnosed with zoster and matched controls were asked about contacts with people with varicella or zoster in the past 10 years. The team notes that 244 patients and 485 controls were included in the study.
