There is a direct relationship between quality of life (QOL) and hemoglobin level for cancer patients, according to the results of a study published in the Aug. 15 issue of Cancer that correlated hemoglobin values with various QOL measures for cancer patients involved in community-based epoetin-alfa trials.
“Hemoglobin increases have been associated with QOL improvements in anemic cancer patients treated with epoetin alfa, but intervention generally has been reserved for symptomatic anemia or hemoglobin <10 g/dL,” write Jeffrey Crawford, MD, from Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina, and colleagues
