Findings from a new study suggest that menopause enhances the release of lead from bone stores into the blood, which could place peri- and postmenopausal women at increased risk
for lead toxicity.
The authors found that women who took estrogen after menopause appeared to be less likely to have higher than average levels of lead in their blood compared with women who did not take estrogen. The amount of lead present in a woman’s blood also correlated with the amount of lead in her bones, but only among postmenopausal women who did not use estrogen.
