– Results of a population-based study, reported in the August 1st Journal of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndromes, indicate a high annual incidence of HIV-related lipodystrophy syndrome, and links it to specific components of first line antiretroviral therapies.
Previous reports put the prevalence of HIV-associated morphologic and lipid abnormalities between 18% and 70%, the authors explain, but carefully designed studies have yet to clarify the cause of such symptoms.
Dr. Katherine Heath from University of British Columbia in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada and colleagues investigated the annual incidence of lipodystrophy-associated symptoms in a population-based study of 745 HIV-infected individuals representing a broad spectrum of treatment patterns.
