Daily multivitamin/mineral or vitamin E supplementation, even long-term, does not decrease the incidence or severity of acute respiratory infections in well-nourished older people.
In fact, Dutch researchers observed adverse effects of daily 200 mg vitamin E supplementation on illness severity in their study of 652 non-institutionalised people aged 60 years and older.
Moreover, among people experiencing an infection, those who received vitamin E instead had longer total illness duration, more symptoms and a higher frequency of fever and restriction of activity.
Investigators from Wageningen University enrolled participants using two community-based sampling strategies in the Wageningen area of the Netherlands in a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled, two times two factorial trial.
