A brainwave finding that has been described in patients with chronic schizophrenia is not present in patients who present with their first episode of the psychiatric illness, according to a report published in the August issue of the Archives of General Psychiatry.
In patients with chronic schizophrenia, the difference between brainwave response to a repetitive stimulus and brainwave response to a different stimulus is reduced. This difference between the two brainwave potentials is known as mismatch negativity (MMN) and, therefore, chronic schizophrenics are said to have a reduction in MMN.
