Avoidance of activity promotes muscle weakness leading to increased disability among patients with osteoarthritis of the knee, Dutch researchers report.
Dr. M. P. M. Steultjens from the Netherlands Institute of Health Services Research, Utrecht, and colleagues analyzed the relationship between avoidance of activity and physical
disability resulting from muscle weakness in 107 patients with osteoarthritis of the knee.
Using regression analysis, the researchers first assessed the effect of avoidance of activity on the level of disability. They then established the connection between avoidance of activity and muscle strength.
