Treatment with gemcitabine plus trastuzumab improves outcomes in previously treated patients with metastatic breast cancer, according to the preliminary results of a phase II study.
A team led by Dr. Joyce O’Shaughnessy from the Baylor-Charles A. Sammons Cancer Center, Baylor University Medical Center, Dallas, Texas, United States, enrolled 38 women with histologically confirmed metastatic breast cancer and 2+ or 3+ tumour HER2 expression.
The patients had undergone between one and three chemotherapy regimens prior to enrollment. Fifty-three percent of patients had estrogen receptor/progesterone receptor-positive disease; 61 percent had 2+ and 39 percent had 3+ HER2 expression.
