Two Topical Corticosteroids Equally Safe And Effective For Sunburn

Two topical corticosteroid treatments, 0.1% methylprednisone aceponate milk (MPA) and 0.1% hydrocortisone 17-butyrate emulsion (HCB), are equally safe and effective for treating sunburn in healthy subjects.

Topical corticosteroids have been frequently used to treat sunburn, according to investigators, but few controlled studies have been conducted to support their use.

The investigators, from the Hôpital de L’Árchet 2 in Nice, France, Schering AG in Berlin, Germany, and Berlex Laboratories, Inc., in Montville, New Jersey, United States, collaborated on a trial of MPA and HCB.

Twenty volunteers with skin type III were included in the study. Their skin was irradiated with simulated sunlight, and then random and blinded treatments were applied to both sides of the spine. Treatments were given twice daily for seven days. Daily assessments were conducted during treatment with a one-day follow-up.
