NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Jul 26 –
Adding transpupillary thermotherapy to iodine-125 plaque radiotherapy for the treatment of choroidal melanoma provides excellent tumor control over 5 years, according to a report from Wills Eye Hospital, a tertiary referral center for ocular tumors, in Philadelphia. In a prospective noncomparative interventional case series, Dr. Carol L. Shields of Thomas Jefferson University and associates treated 270 consecutive patients.
They customized a radioactive plaque for each patient using an array of I-125 seeds. Thermotherapy with infrared laser was first performed immediately following plaque removal, and thereafter during two sessions 4 months apart.
