Hip fracture surgery using gamma nail or a cementless hemiarthroplasty increases the risk of later ipsilateral femoral fracture.
According to researchers at the Edinburgh Orthopaedic Trauma Unit, Scotland, “Implant-related fractures following hip fracture surgery are more common than has previously been appreciated.” Risks of later femoral fractures in susceptible osteoporotic patients are increased following the surgical use of either internal fixation or prosthetic replacement of the femoral head, they point out.
This prospective study is based on a total of 1,247 male and 4,983 female patients (6696 hip fractures), median age 82 years, who were admitted to the Edinburgh unit from 1988 to 1997. Details of original hip fracture treatment and subject demographic information were collated along with audits of all later readmissions for implant related fractures.
