Different types of malformations of cortical development appear across a spectrum, and prompted by a complex mix of factors that include genetics and environment. These suggestions from investigators in Brazil add weight to several current lines of research into malformations of cortical development (MCD).
Although the causes of some MCD have been established, reasons for others remain unclear. Maria Augusta Montenegro, MD, and colleagues from the Departments of Neurology and Medical Genetics, University of Campinas, Campinas, examined the interrelationship of genetics and prenatal injury in the genesis of these malformations in 76 consecutive patients and their families in a university hospital neurology clinic.
