– Restenosis after percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) is significantly decreased with supplemental omega-3 fatty acid taken for a month before and after the procedures, according to the results of a randomized trial.
Dr. Raffaele De Caterina from the Institute of Clinical Physiology, Pisa, Italy, and colleagues with the Esapent for Prevention of Restenosis Italian (ESPRIT) study randomly assigned 339 patients who were to undergo PTCA without stenting, to omega-3 fatty acid or placebo.
The omega-3 fatty acid preparation was given as ethyl ester preparation in six 1-g capsules/day. Capsules provided 3 g eicosapentaenoic acid and 2.1 g docosahexaenoic acid. Treatment was started 1 month before PTCA and given for 1 month after, and then a half-dose was given for 6 months, the researchers note.
