Duloxetine Controls Symptoms of Stress Urinary Incontinence

Duloxetine, a selective reuptake inhibitor of the neurotransmitters serotonin and norepinephrine (SNRI), was safe and somewhat effective in controlling the symptoms of stress urinary incontinence, according to the results of a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial reported in the July issue of the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Duloxetine is awaiting U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval.

“Current treatment options are limited to surgery, devices and pelvic muscle strengthening exercises,” lead author Peggy A. Norton, MD, of the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, says in a news release. “If eventually approved, duloxetine could be the first drug therapy indicated for the treatment of stress urinary incontinence, offering a new treatment option for millions of women with the condition.”

In this study, 553 women aged 18 to 65 years with a predominant symptom of stress urinary incontinence were randomized to treatment with placebo or duloxetine 20 mg/day, 40

mg/day, or 80 mg/day.
