Curettage is an alternative to surgical excision of giant congenital melanocytic nevi during the first two weeks of a baby’s life.
Dr. Linda De Raeve and colleagues from the Department of Dermatology, Academisch Ziekenhuis Vrije Universiteit Brussel, in Brussels, Belgium, report the results of treating 16 neonates who had giant congenital melanocytic nevi with curettage. They did not compare the subjects directly with control subjects who had surgical excision.
The babies were treated between 1990 and 2000 and received close clinical follow-up. No melanoma has been seen in the 16 children and, in most, the cosmetic and functional results have been good.
