High expression of galectin-9, a cellular adhesion protein, is associated with a better prognosis for malignant melanoma, according to a report in the June 20th International Journal of Cancer.
Galectins appear to modulate functions that include cell proliferation and cell death, the authors explain, with influences on both cell adhesion and apoptosis. Their role in melanocytic tumors, however, is unclear.
Dr. Toshiro Kageshita, from Kumamato University Medical School in Japan, and colleagues studied the effects of galectin-9 on human melanoma cell lines and prognosis.
