Taking primary wound cultures does not inform the subsequent management of open extremity fractures of long bones.
Previous studies had not elucidated whether taking primary wound cultures informed the management of open extremity fractures of long bones.
So, physicians from Morristown Memorial Hospital, New Jersey, took samples from 117 open extremity fractures of the long bones. The fractures were grades I to III. The wound samples were cultured for aerobic and anaerobic organisms.
Researchers compared organisms grown from the primary wound culture to those responsible for any subsequent wound infection.
