Acyclovir cream is a safe and effective treatment for herpes simplex labialis, but it does not prevent the development of lesions, according to a report published in the July issue of Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy.
Acyclovir cream has been used in several countries outside the US for more than a decade, the authors note. However, despite its widespread use, proof of the cream’s efficacy has only come from a few small trials conducted in the 1980s.
To verify the drug’s efficacy, Dr. Spotswood L. Spruance, from the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, and colleagues assessed the outcomes of more than 1300 patients with herpes simplex labialis who were randomized in two identical clinical trials to receive acyclovir cream or vehicle cream.
