Female sex is one of several factors that may predict which HIV-infected patients treated with highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) are likely to develop severe liver enzyme elevations (LEEs).
Dr. Ferdinand W. N. M. Wit, from the Academic Medical Center in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, and colleagues evaluated the occurrence of grade 4 LEEs among 560 patients who began HAART between July 1996 and January 2000.
To be classified as a grade 4 LEE, aminotransferase levels had to be > 10 times the upper limit of normal and > 200 U above baseline values.
