Measurement of Adduction Moment Predicts Progression in Knee Osteoarthritis

Adduction moment of the knee, an indicator of the dynamic load on the medial compartment, can be used to predict radiographic disease progression in patients with medial compartment knee osteoarthritis, Japanese researchers have learned. Between 1991 and 1993, Dr. T. Miyazaki and others from Fukui Medical Center collected baseline data from 106 patients with medial compartment knee osteoarthritis.

They took x-rays and determined gait and level of pain. Six years later, they re-examined 74 of the original group for radiographic changes. The authors found that baseline pain was more severe and adduction moment higher in the 32 patients with evidence of disease progression at the 6-year mark than in the 42 without evidence of disease progression.

There was also a significant correlation between the adduction moment at entry and joint space narrowing of the medial compartment during followup.
