BARCELONA, Spain (Reuters Health) Jul 12 –
Newly formulated guidelines, if adopted, will help standardize the management of occupational exposure to HIV in Europe.
Although many European countries have national post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) treatment guidelines for occupational HIV exposure, no common recommendations exist and there is considerable variability in the guidelines from country to country.
In September 2001, the European Commission funded a project, coordinated by Italy, to examine the current practices in nine countries. The nine participating countries included Italy, Croatia, Denmark, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Portugal, Spain and Switzerland. From this analysis, a consensus meeting subsequently proposed guidelines for Europe earlier this year.
