Patient Perception Of Illness May Mask Anxiety And Depression

Anxiety and depression may be masked among many primary care patients when they consult about their perceived health problems.

Primary care doctors should be made aware of the latest research to enable them to more easily recognize patients at risk for anxiety and depression, regardless of their presenting medical diagnoses.

This is advocated by clinicians at the Department of Community and Family Medicine, and the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, at the Duke University Medical Center, Durham, North Carolina, United States.

Anxiety and depression is frequent among patients, but can be difficult for doctors to recognize because of comorbid conditions. This prompted the Duke clinicians to analyze the relationship among symptoms, diagnoses, and severity of illness as indicators of anxiety and depression in primary care. Patients completed the Duke Health Profile, measuring health-related quality of life and screens for anxiety and depression.

Clinicians kept track of patient diagnoses, and assessed the severity of any illness.
