Lipid transfer proteins (LTPs), the major allergens of rosaceae fruits such as peach, could be involved in patient allergic reactions to unrelated foods such as chestnut and apple.
The link may be sensitisation to the cross-reactive Artemisia LPT, Spanish researchers ggest. Investigators from Hospital Virgen de la Arrixaca, ETS de Ingenieros Agronomos, ALK-Abello, SA and Hospital Alcorcon in Madrid also say rosaceae LTPs could be useful for in vivo diagnosis of allergy to rosaceae fruit.
They evaluated reactivity to LTPs from peach, apple, chestnut and Artemisia pollen in 79 people: 47 patients allergic to peach, 20 patients without food allergy but sensitised to Artemisia pollen and 12 controls.
