NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Jun 21 –
Bronchoalveolar lavage with a dilute surfactant solution is a safe and potentially effective treatment for meconium aspiration syndrome (MAS), according to a report published in the June issue of Pediatrics.
In neonates with MAS, meconium, inflammatory cells and mediators, edema fluid, and various proteins are known to accumulate in airways and alveoli, making breathing difficult. Standard lavage fluids can wash this debris away; however, this therapy does not remedy another hallmark of the disorder–surfactant dysfunction.
