Routine use of prophylactic ephedrine does not appear to be warranted to prevent adverse effects of maternal hypotension following spinal anesthesia for Cesarean delivery.
An analysis of 14 trials examining the practice of using ephedrine found that though it is more effective than control treatments for preventing hypotension, there is no clinically relevant positive effect on neonatal outcome, according to researchers at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Prince of Wales Hospital, Shatin, Hong Kong, China.
Using MEDLINE, EMBASE, the Cochrane Controlled Trials Registry, contact with leading experts, and a reference list of published articles, the researchers identified 14 randomised controlled trials of prophylactic ephedrine to prevent maternal hypotension following spinal anesthesia for Cesarean delivery. The studies represented data from a total of 641 patients.
