Amniotic Membrane Useful For Reconstructing Ocular Neoplasm Excision Defects

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Jun 11 –

 Reconstruction following the removal of large ocular surface neoplasias (OSN) can be successfully accomplished with the use of amniotic membrane transplantation, according to a report published in the June issue of the British Journal of Ophthalmology.

 Previously, Dr. Scheffer C. G. Tseng, from the University of Miami, and colleagues evaluated amniotic membrane transplantation as a means of reconstructing defects resulting from the removal of conjunctival lesions or from symblepharolysis. In the current study, the researchers applied the technique to 16 patients with defects that occurred after the removal of large OSNs.
