Infants who are breastfed have a 30% reduction in risk of becoming obese in childhood compared with formula-fed infants, according to the results of a population-based study reported in the June 8th issue of The Lancet.
Dr. John J. Reilly from the Royal Hospital for Sick Children, Glasgow, UK, and colleagues collected data for 32,200 Scottish children, who were 39 to 42 months of age in 1999, and for whom breastfeeding status during early infancy was known. The researchers defined obesity as a body mass index within or exceeding the 95th percentile at 39 months and the 98th percentile at 42 months.
