Androgen deprivation therapy, a common treatment for prostate cancer, is known to produce bone loss.
Findings from a recent study indicate that serial bone densitometry testing may be able to detect patients who are at high-risk for osteoporotic fractures.
Dr. Alfredo Berruti, from the University of Torino in Italy, and colleagues analyzed the effects of androgen deprivation therapy on the bone density and body mass of 35 elderly men with prostate cancer.
None of the patients had bone metastases, and all were treated with luteinizing hormone releasing hormone analogue for 12 months.
Bone densitometry testing was performed at baseline and after 6 and 12 months of therapy. The researchers’ findings are published in the June issue of The Journal of Urology.
