Young men who require long-term anti-epileptic medication for seizures, experience significant hip bone loss due to vitamin D deficiency.
American researchers suggest dual-energy radiographic absorptiometry scanning of the hip may prove useful in identifying those most at risk for rapid bone loss.
Clinicians at Veterans Affairs Puget Sound Health Care System and the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle used this absorptiometry to determine femoral neck bone mineral density in 81 consecutive men, aged 25 to 54 years, attending an outpatient seizure clinic.
Low bone mineral density (BMD) values underwent analysis for recognised bone loss risk factors. Between 12 to 29 months later, 54 patients had repeat dual- energy x-ray
absorptiometry to assess the BMD change rate over time.
