While the patient-reported frequency of aspirin use is high among those with coronary artery disease (CAD), there are still many who are not taking aspirin or another antiplatelet drug, according to a report in the May 1st issue of The American Journal of Cardiology.
Dr. Nancy M. Allen LaPointe and colleagues, from the Duke Clinical Research Institute, Durham, North Carolina, examined the prevalence of and factors associated with aspirin use and nonuse among CAD patients.
They surveyed a subset (n = 2694) of some 16,000 patients who have had a cardiac procedure at Duke University. The subset comprised all patients considered aspirin nonusers and a 5% sample of those considered aspirin users.
