Education Program Turns Sildenafil (Viagra) Failures Into Successes

ORLANDO, FL — May 27, 2002 —

A program that includes a video on how to use the impotence drug Viagra (sildenafil) appears to help men who say the drug did not help them.

Researchers found that about 40 percent of men who reported no improvement in erectile dysfuction with sildenafil achieved successful erections after watching a brief video, reading some educational brochures and participating in a 12-minute discussion with a urologist.

Dr. Geoffrey Sklar, associate professor of urology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, in Baltimore, Maryland, presented the findings here Sunday at the 97th annual

scientific meeting of the American Urological Association (AUA).

He said poor patient education can be blamed for poor results in many cases. “Many of the initial failures had tried the drug only one time and never had any sexual stimulation. A lot of these men thought sexual stimulation just meant swallowing the pill,” he said. Dr. Sklar enrolled 253 men who had received a prescription for sildenafil but had not achieved an erection sufficient to permit sexual intercourse.

Some of the men never tried even one pill because of concerns about safety and other issues,

the said.
