Body weight modulates cholesterol metabolism in non-insulin dependent type 2 diabetics. Cholesterol absorption decreases and cholesterol synthesis increases with increasing insulin resistance in these patients, report investigators from the Department of Medicine at the University of Helsinki in Helsinki and the Department of Clinical Nutrition at Kuopio University Hospital in Kuopio, Finland.
The investigators studied cholesterol metabolism in 64 type 2 diabetics. Patients were divided
into normal-weight and obese groups based on body mass indexBoth groups had similar serum cholesterol and blood glucose levels.
However, the obese group had higher fecal neutral sterol excretion, cholesterol and bile acid synthesis, cholesterol turnover and serum cholesterol precursors and lower cholesterol absorption, serum cholestanol and plant sterols.
