Hypertension Linked With Higher Cancer Mortality

Hypertension appears to be associated with an increased risk of mortality from cancer, particularly renal cell carcinoma.

To examine the hypothesis that hypertension might increase the long-term risk of cancer, investigators in Tel-Aviv, Israel reviewed the medical literature studying the relationship between high blood pressure and malignancy.

They conducted a MEDLINE search of English-language articles published between January 1966 and January 2000 using the terms "hypertension" or "blood pressure" and "neoplasm" or "cancer" or "malignancy."

The investigators also reviewed prospective studies which reported cancer incidence or mortality in hypertensive and non-hypertensive patients. In addition, they looked at case-control studies which reported the prevalence of hypertension in cancer patients and controls, as well as references from identified articles.
