Pollinosis patients in Mediterranean countries are likely reacting to two major allergens, Ole e 1 and Ole e 2.
Spanish researchers suggest combining a few olive pollen allergens can substitute the crude extract for in vivo as well as in vitro diagnostic purposes. They note that Olea europaea is an important cause of pollinosis in patients in Mediterranean countries.
They studied the IgE-binding frequency of Ole e 1, Ole e 2, Ole e 3, Ole e 6 and Ole e 7 from O. europaea pollen in 119 consecutive patients with seasonal rhinitis and/or asthma, 10 atopic patients without a history of pollinosis and 10 healthy controls.
Seasonal rhinitis/asthma patients all had a positive skin-prick test to O. europaea pollen extract. Atopic patients did not.
