Policy for Imaging Pregnant and Possibly Pregnant Patients Is Instituted

NEW YORK (MedscapeWire) May 01 — In an effort to ensure the safety of pregnant and possibly pregnant patients examined in the emergency room, researchers have now developed a policy for using radiation to diagnose these patients.
"Surprisingly, a search through the medical literature and an informal survey of some academic radiologists yielded a lack of clear policies or specific instructions on this issue," Meghan Blake, a medical student at the University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City, says in a news release.

"[Computed tomography] (CT) and other methods that use radiation are an integral part of how we diagnose acute care patients; it became apparent that a policy was needed," says Blake. She presented the policy at the American Roentgen Ray Society annual meeting on April 30 in Atlanta, Georgia.
