NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Apr 23 – Intramedullary (IM) rodding, a common treatment for femur fractures in adults, also is also effective in children with these fractures, provided they are skeletally mature, according to a report by Canadian researchers.
The procedure should be avoided in children with open femoral physes due to the risk of avascular necrosis of the femoral head, study author Dr. Merv Letts and colleagues note. In addition, IM rodding should be avoided in children initially treated with external fixation because of an increased risk of infection.
