NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Apr 18 – During a longitudinal study of schoolchildren in Pittsburgh, researchers observed the sudden emergence and rapid spread of erythromycin resistance in pharyngeal isolates of group A streptococci, according to a report published in the April 18th issue of The New England Journal of Medicine.
When first evaluated between October 1998 and May 2000, none of the children harbored erythromycin-resistant isolates. At reassessment between October 2000 and May 2001, however, nearly half of isolates were resistant to the macrolide antibiotic.
